Ebenezer Howard had a dream - to build a garden city where people could live and bring up children in a clean, healthy environment surrounded by trees and green spaces.

Letchworth Recollections is not a history book, in it the citizens speak for themselves. This is how they remember their childhood, first jobs and leisure time. It introduces us to the many characters who were attracted to this new vibrant concept in semi urban living.

That's how Maureen Maddren introduces Letchworth Recollections, the first book, which covers 1903 to 1939.

The picture shows an aerial view of the Spirella factory nearing completion in 1920. There are still many roads devoid of buildings with very little along the Broadway and many paths still criss-crossing the town.
