 Coming to Letchworth

At the turn of the century my mother and father came back from several years in South Africa. On arrival in London, my parents rented a house in Clapham whilst my father looked around for a place for them to settle.

The new and promising development in Letchworth Garden City appealed to him and he and my mother came down by train to view the possibilities.

My mother later told me how surprised they were on climbing the many steps from the platform to the ticket office to find themselves viewing a stretch of country almost devoid of houses.
