 Queen's Silver Jubilee

Ashdown Street Party - Click to enlarge

For the Queen's Silver Jubilee, we organised a party for the whole street. I'm going to be biased here but I thought that Yardley had the best street party in the whole estate! At the time I was working full time and together with a lady called Fran, we decided to organise a party for our street.

We went round asking for participants and I think we were hoping for about six families to help assist. We spent about three or four months planning and saving for it. We used to go round every Monday asking for 20p from every family.

We used to organise little raffles to help support the event and we wrote to the police asking for the road to be closed off for the day of the party. I remember we were one of the first roads to ask the police for their assistance because they asked us a lot of questions, as they hadn't done anything like this before.

We used to go to the local shops to get prizes for the raffles. I certainly remember going to Hartleys to get supplies and Forbuoys also supplied us with chocolate. We were one of the first people to ask for supplies and were therefore quite happy to give us these. I'm sure they got cheesed off after a while with other people asking for supplies!
